Your ceramic snack:

EGYPT is generally thought to
be the birthplace of THE
POTTER ’S WHEEL.
It was there, around 3000BC
that a long shaft was added
under the centre of the wheel
head (the flat, round, turning
surface used for forming wet
clay into cylindrical forms). A
heavy fly wheel at the base of
this shaft was introduced, providing
power and momentum
for the rotation of the wheel
head.

Apart from our recent harnessing
of electrical power,
the machine has remained
largely the same to this day.

FREAKY FACT: The conventional wheel head is horizontal
but there are some that are constructed to work at an
angle and still others that work upside down!!

Your ceramic snack:

George E. Ohr (1857-1918) was inventive, unconventional and technically virtuosic at wheel-thrown and altered pottery. He became known as the “Mad Potter of Biloxi” and the “Carnival Potter” due to his unusual performance approach to the craft of pottery!

Your ceramic snack:

Copper is a metal that is in many glazes. Did you know that it can provide red or green colour effects depending on the amount of oxygen available to it during a kiln firing? It’s true! Think of the oxidized copper roofs of the parliament buildings, and by contrast a new penny. The most dramatic examples of this “split personality” can be seen on some raku pottery pieces. These are exposed to mixed atmospheric conditions (both oxidation and reduction) and can display bright reds and vivid greens side by side on one surface. Thought you’d want to know. Have a great summer.
